Environment & Biodiversity

Biodiversity – having a wide range of ecosystems, ecological processes, species and genes is necessary for human existence.

Biodiversity in the North Saskatchewan River watershed has always been under threat – from competing land uses, pollution, population growth, climate changes and human activities.

Community & Recreation

Community

All communities throughout the North Saskatchewan River watershed impact the form and function of the land in many ways. In the past, when populations were small and development minimal, the implications of human impact on the land draining into the main river system were not obvious.

Industry & Agriculture

Agriculture

When agricultural lands are managed with a healthy watershed in mind, water quality is maintained and soil retention is increased. This can also lead to increased crop production and improved livestock health. Extending fields and pasture too close to riparian zones of creeks, streams, and lakes increases the risk of fertilizers, manure and pesticides contaminating water through runoff.
