REGULATION OF WATER USE IN ALBERTA
2012 | Studies/ Reports | Policy and Water Quantity

Water resources in Alberta are managed by Alberta Environment and Parks under the Water Act (CW‐3, RSA 2000). Municipal approval may be required for activities within a municipality (re: the application of laws under the provincial Municipal Government Act). Certain other activities may require approval under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA).

This document is a shortened version of an online training resource for the Oil and Gas Industry. The report outlines the way water use is regulated in Alberta. It includes information on the types of authorization in the Water Act, on filing statements of concern regarding water use, on enforcement of the Water Act, and on fees for water licences.
